Why Redoubt?
The Redoubt area is a part of Eastbourne in which we live. It is named for the fortress known as The Redoubt, which was built in 1805 as part of the coastal defences against a possible Napoleonic invasion.
I find to my surprise that it is just over a month since I posted on here. So for those of you out there who hang on my every word and have been sitting there with baited breath since 19 July, my apologies. For those of you (the overwhelming majority, I am sure) who couldn’t care less whether I say anything or not, here’s my latest annoying pontification.

Had it not been for the COVID-19 virus, this weekend would have seen the fourth annual Eastbourne Pride event, including a march from the pier to Princes Park followed by a festival and concert in the park. This prompted me to reflect on the continued importance of Pride events, whilst a reader's question sent my mind back to the origins of the UK's gay community.

I've been ruminating on the way memories affect our lives, and how frequently they pop unbidden into my mind, especially those relating to the early sixties. However, I'm also aware of the dangers of too much hankering after those "blue remembered hills".

Pondering on the passing of Dame Vera Lynn and trying to understand the depth of affection that the wartime generation had for her and the songs she sang. In fact, people of all generations have songs or singers that evoke special memories for them. What will be the song or singer that evokes the spring of 2020?
